The idea of going on a secondment to Singapore originated from a client who established a family office structure in Singapore many years ago. Since then, Singapore has remained a top investment choice for high net wealth individuals. Driven by curiosity and a desire to explore, I took the initiative to meet with Sam and discuss the possibility of being seconded to Singapore and the potential for business development upon returning to Taiwan. Fortunately, the proposal was supported, and I successfully got this valuable opportunity, embarking on a journey filled with challenge and growth.
As is well known, Singapore is a multicultural country, and PwC Singapore is no exception. While in Taiwan, I primarily served local clients, but in Singapore, my clients came from all over the world, making the work environment more international. This experience allowed me to deeply appreciate the charm of cultural integration. I worked alongside colleagues from Malaysia, Indonesia, India, and other countries. Despite differences in culture, cuisine, and language, these distinctions became bridges for communication. I employed "snack diplomacy", winning over new friends with Taiwanese pineapple cakes, puddings, and fresh cake rolls, while also being treated to unforgettable dishes like curry fish head, chili crab, and dishes from Nyonya cuisine. These moments not only brought us closer but also allowed me to immerse myself in the multicultural charm of Singapore.
However, as a manager-level secondee responsible for local clients' tax matters, the task was far from easy. In addition to completing tasks assigned by the Partners, I needed to communicate with clients, lead the team, and review the work of team members. Initially, I had to relearn many aspects, including familiarizing myself with Singapore's tax regulations and tax incentive rules. Despite the support of colleagues and relying on my accumulated experience, I still faced various challenges and setbacks. This secondment experience taught me the importance of "resetting and recharging." Whether it was professional knowledge or mindset adjustment, continuous learning and adaptation were essential. Maintaining a stable and positive mindset became a crucial lesson during this journey.
Looking back on this secondment period, I cannot be certain if I have grown, but I am confident that this experience has made me more resilient and mature. Every challenge and setback was an opportunity to rediscover myself and push beyond my limits. Finally, I would like to express my gratitude to everyone and everything I encountered during this journey. Whether it was the support of colleagues, the trust of clients, or the memorable culinary and cultural exchanges, these moments have become an indispensable part of my life and have filled me with anticipation and confidence for the future.
